Crovie

Although Pennan is, in itself, a beautiful spot there are many other equally spectacular villages nearby. Crovie (pronounced 'Crivvie' locally) has a similar layout to Pennan, but with one important difference - there is no 'street' as such. Instead, the houses are separated from the sea only by a narrow footpath! If you pay a visit to Crovie look out for the row of handcarts at one end of the village - the only method of transporting supplies to the houses from the car park at the foot of the hill!

Gardenstown

A little farther along the coast you'll find the village of Gardenstown. This is much bigger than either Pennan or Crovie and built up the cliffside with row upon row of houses, each looking down over the rooftop of its neighbour below. Although Gardenstown was once a thriving fishing community, the harbour is now given over chiefly to pleasure craft. Gardenstown is connected to Crovie by a narrow walkway skirting the cliff. This is a marvellous walk on a fine summer's day - but not recommended at high tide or in times of storm!
